Digital SAT Structure
Preparing for the SAT? Understanding how the test is structured can give you a big advantage. Here's a simple breakdown:
1. Sections and Time Allocation:
- The digital SAT consists of two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math.
- Students have a total of 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete the test.
2. Reading and Writing Section:
- Time Allotted: 64 minutes.
- This section is divided into two equal-length modules, each lasting 32 minutes.
- In total, there are 54 questions to tackle.
3. Math Section:
- Time Allotted: 70 minutes.
- Similar to Reading and Writing, the Math section is split into two modules, each lasting 35 minutes.
- You'll be faced with 44 math-related questions.
4. Transition Break:
- After completing the Reading and Writing section, you'll get a well-deserved 10-minute break before diving into the Math section.
5. Question Difficulty and Adaptability:
- The first module in both sections contains a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions.
- Depending on your performance in the first module, the second module will adjust to be more or less challenging. To understand more about how this adaptive testing works, check out our article on Multistage Adaptive Testing.
6. More Time for Each Question:
- Compared to the ACT, the SAT offers 68% more time per question. This gives you more room to think through and answer confidently.
Question Types:
- Most questions are multiple choice. However, in the Math section, you'll also find questions where you need to enter the answer directly. For more details on the Math section, read about the 4 Types of Math Tested.
Guessing Is Encouraged:
- Remember, there's no penalty for guessing. If you're unsure, taking an educated guess is better than leaving it blank. For further tips on how to prepare for the SAT, read our guide on Easy Prep Tips for Success.
By understanding the structure of the SAT, you're better equipped to approach each section with confidence. Take advantage of the time you have, and don't hesitate to make educated guesses when needed. Good luck on your SAT journey!
